Our stylish and practical range of umbrellas are going down a storm at Guildford Children’s Centre. Whether augmenting more permanent shelter or providing flexible temporary shelter, each umbrella can be easily moved from location to location, perhaps to provide shelter on a hot and steamy sports day and then moved to cover a sandpit or seating area: an elegant and practicle shelter solution for tight budgets.
We have recently invested in some pretty cool machinery and are now able to offer the installation of very natural-looking recycled rubber surfacing, Ecoscape. This solid bound rubber mulch system is a cost effective alternative to less durable loose fill natural products such as wood chips or coloured rubber crumb products. Because it is a bound material, it is very low maintenance and is very quick to install with little disturbance to the existing area.
As well as this rubber surfacing, we also offer Wetpour surfacing, ‘astro turf’-type synthetic turf, tarmac and coloured concrete surfacing, as well as natural materials.

As an affordable and very stylish alternative to a more permanent structure, these umbrellas can be rotated throughout the day to track the movement of the sun, useful if used to protect children playing for example in a sandpit. Wallisdean Infant School in Hampshire are the first proud owners of one of our new Story Chairs. They have positioned it beneath our Gazebo and we have built for them within the shelter a small hexagonal performance stage. The Gazebo has been surfaced with our environmentally-friendly recycled bonded rubber mulch which provides a very natural looking but low maintenance surface.
Teachers and pupils alike are certainly reaping the benefits of their new lean-to shelter during this spell of pretty extreme weather!! Our specialist polycarbonate roof panels filter 100% of the sun’s harmful rays whilst, thanks to the translucency of each panel, maintaining a light and cool space beneath.
This outdoor canopy was an affordable and stylish way of covering over 34 metres square of ground space.
Hot off the work bench, I managed to snap this picture of our new and sinuously-lovely story chair. Solidly built, of generous proportions, this gothic-inspired piece of furniture will add a sense of drama to any school’s outdoor environment. Necessity was definitely the mother of invention at Guildford Children’s Centre. After many months of consultation, we have responded to sudden cuts to budget by adapting the originally proposed designs, creating fresh and even more exciting solutions!
Beachcomber Shelter.
The centre has long been a flagship for UK children’s centres and Sun and Shade have relished the challenge of creating a series of shelters that blend sympathetically into the existing landscape. The shelter above has been designed to span a cascading water play area, and our specialist translucent polycarbonate roof panels provide a pleasant space to shelter, filtering 100% of the sun’s harmful UV radiation. The centre wanted to reflect the naturalness of the area and we responded by designing a very contemporary shelter but drawing on influences of beach huts.
Our Roman shelter
An existing stage has been covered with our classical Roman shelter. The area between an adjacent mound (bottom left of picture) and the stage is prone to flooding, and the addition of a timber boardwalk lends further drama to the space as well as keeping little feet dry!
The BRIT School Octagonal Tables.
The BRIT School, Britain’s only free Performing Arts and Technology School, have found the eight octagonal table and seating pods we provided for them so successful that they are looking to increase their numbers around the school. Designed to be disassembled into to halves to facilitate moving, yet heavy enough to dissuade the burliest of sticky fingers, each table will comfortably seat eight people. This unique and contemporary design is equally at home on grass as on hard surfacing, and where damp conditions exist, each unit can be linked via timber walkways to create a series of islands. On uneven ground, adjustable pads are available to level each table and a wheelchair accessible version is available.
